The initiative is part of a campaign led by the Youth Union of MoES to support the most remote schools of the country

From 10th to 12th November 2024, H.E. Dr. Samlane Phankhavong, Vice Minister of Education and Sports (MoES) led a delegation composed of MoES representatives from the Department of Planning, the Cabinet, the Youth Union, Vientiane Provincial Education and Sports Service (PESS) and Dongkhamxang Teacher Training College (TTC) to visit and handover learning materials, textbooks, sport equipment, clothes and essential products to the most remote schools in Phin district, Savannakhet province. The handover ceremony took place on 11th November and was attended by Dr. Samlane Phankhavong, Vice Minister of Education and Sports, Mr. Sithong Sikhao, Acting Director General of Department of Planning as well as the Deputy Director General of Cabinet of MoES, the Director from Dongkhamxang TTC, the Deputy Governor of Phin District, the Head of Phin District Education Service Bureau (DESB), the Youth Unions of the Department of Planning and Phin DESB staff.

The items were donated by the Ministry of Education and Sports, the Australian government through the BEQUAL Program, Dongkhamxang TTC, and several public and private educational institutions in Vientiane Capital including Vientiane High School, Bona Ngow High School, Dara Kindergarten, and Bank Kindergarten. The donation comprised of computers, LCD monitors, textbooks, teacher guides, notebooks, pens, pencils, clothes, and some sports equipment. In addition, several private companies offered financial support for the purchase of sports equipment as well as travel expenses of the delegation.

Director General of Department of Planning of MoES supported fund to a remote poor Ethnic School

The donated items were handed over to four primary schools in Phin District and one ethnic school, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of National Teachers’ Day. During the donation ceremony, the Vice Minister also spoke to education administrators, staff, teachers and students from five schools in Phin District.

Dr. Samlane Phankhavong handed over textbooks, teacher guides, pens, pencils, story books, sport equipment and clothes to each school visited. The delegation met with teachers to discuss the new pedagogy of the revised primary curriculum that was developed with Australian Government support. This pedagogy is based on a modern teaching approach that is student-centred and integrates active learning, engaging students in learning through hands-on experience and practical application. The delegation also discussed how ICT could be used in teaching and learning and met with the education leaders of the district to reaffirm the importance of their role in ensuring quality teaching and learning.

Dr. Samlane Phankhavong said: “The Government of Laos recognises that all children have the right to access good quality education. Quality basic education is the foundation of a prosperous and peaceful nation. I would like to thank the Youth Unions of the different Ministries, the Vientiane PESS, the schools in Vientiane and the private sector who donated funds and materials. And I’d also like to thank the Australian Government through the BEQUAL program for the learning materials to support our efforts in leaving no one behind.”

On the occasion of the donation of supplies to an ethnic secondary school, the Deputy Director General of the Department of Planning, MoES donated 10,000,000 LAK to contribute to the provision of clean water to the school. This donation came from contributions from various entrepreneurs. This donation answers an issue raised by the school principal and will enable students to have access to clean water and better hygiene. This ethnic minority school is rated as a poor school in a remote area. It is a boarding school where students live together.
